March 21st marks World Down Syndrome Day, a global day of awareness, celebration, and advocacy.
The date (3/21) reflects the extra copy of chromosome 21 that defines Down syndrome.
More Than a Diagnosis
Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal variation. While individuals may experience degrees of intellectual disability and certain health considerations, it’s only one part of who they are.
People with Down syndrome are active members of our communities—working, learning, building relationships, and contributing in meaningful ways every day.
Voices from Our Community

Alyssa Walterson has been part of our Living Options Program for the last 14 years. She has Down syndrome and is proud to share her story with you.
Hi, my name is Alyssa Walterson.
I have Down syndrome, and it is who I am. I am curious and want to know everything.
I am proud of myself and the way I am!
I love having fun, especially swimming and going on big slides!
Being around people I care about, like my high school friends, my house friends, and my staff who care for me, makes me very happy.
One of my big dreams is to go to Disney World and enjoy lots of rides and eat pizza all day. And also to go on a cruise!
Thanks, Alyssa!
A Shared Responsibility
World Down Syndrome Day is both a celebration and a reminder: inclusion takes all of us.
Together, we can build a community where people of all abilities are supported, valued, and included—every day.
