The New Canada Disability Benefit

The CDB is a new monthly, tax-free payment designed to enhance the financial security of working-age Canadians with disabilities. Current legislation puts the maximum annual benefit at $2,400 (or $200 per month). The amount received is income-tested and intended to supplement, not replace, existing disability benefits. It’s hoped that in the future this amount will be greatly increased.

For residents of British Columbia, the provincial government has confirmed that the CDB will not affect existing provincial disability assistance. This means eligible individuals will receive the full federal benefit and provincial support.

To qualify for the CDB, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Between 18 and 64 years old.
  • Resident in Canada for tax purposes.
  • Approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).
  • Filed a 2024 income tax return.
  • Spousal Requirement – Both partners must have filed tax returns if married or in a common-law partnership.
  • Temporary Residents – Must have lived in Canada for at least 18 months.

The benefit amount is determined based on your income and, if applicable, your spouse or common-law partner’s income. Here’s a breakdown:
