B.C. Weekly COVID-19 Stats from January 19th to January 26th:

  • The number of new cases in the past week: + 408. The current total number of cases in B.C. is 394,774.

  • In the last week there were 27 new deaths in the province for a current total of 5,061.

  • There are currently 228 British Columbians in hospital; 22 of those are in critical care.

  • Over 14 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C.


B.C. reports fewest patients in hospital with COVID-19 in over a year

Global – British Columbia reported the fewest patients with COVID-19 in hospital in more than a year on Thursday.

As of Jan. 26, there were 228 positive cases in hospital, down from 268 the week prior. There were 22 cases in critical care, up five from last week, according to data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

U.S. is mulling shift to annual COVID-19 boosters. What about Canada?

Global – A U.S. proposal to make COVID-19 vaccinations an annual shot could increase booster uptake if a similar policy were adopted in Canada, but it may be too early to make such a move, according to some health experts.

COVID-19 misinformation cost at least 2,800 lives and $300M, new report says

CBC – The spread of COVID-19 misinformation in Canada cost at least 2,800 lives and $300 million in hospital expenses over nine months of the pandemic, according to estimates in a new report out Thursday.

The report — released by the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA), an independent research organization that receives federal funding — examined how misinformation affected COVID infections, hospitalizations and deaths between March and November of 2021.

Bristol study finds Covid booster gives tenfold increase in antibodies

Vulnerable people who have had a third Coronavirus vaccine, or booster, have a significant increase in antibodies and protection against the virus, according to research.

It found the third jab means they can be just as protected against the disease as people who are healthy.
