Message from Our President

Growing to meet community needs

By Ted Bruce

The DDA Board of Directors advocates for improving services for people with disabilities. One important step recently was to join Inclusion B.C.  Through this organization, we lend our voice to efforts directed at changing the policies and funding from the government. An example is their submission on the BC budget calling for an increase in the persons with disabilities benefit. We have also asked staff to develop a public awareness campaign to build understanding of the value of people with disabilities and the contribution they make to our communities. This will be completed in the coming months and will allow us to showcase our DDA family.

At a more concrete level, the Board is working with CLBC – our primary funder – to identify unmet needs and develop new housing options for a greater number of clients. CLBC has received new funding from the Province to expand services. To capitalize on this, the Board has authorized funding from our reserves for the purchase of new houses suitable for group home clients whose housing and support services will be funded by CLBC.

In the longer term, the Board is developing a housing strategy that will allow us to better respond to the range of housing options people want and need. Whether it is group homes, shared apartments, or independent living, we need to better understand and be prepared to offer living options that best serve people with disabilities. We are fortunate to have funds in reserve that give us flexibility to meet needs through expanded offerings. The founders of DDA knew that waiting for someone else to take action is not always an option. Creativity, innovation, and bold action are essential to fulfil our mandate. The next few years look to be an exciting time for DDA.
