From Redundancy to Success: Darryl’s Journey Back to Work

In 2023, Darryl faced an unexpected challenge. After 22 years of dedicated work as a warehouse worker, the business shut down. Jobs West initially supported Darryl in obtaining the position back in 2001. Adjusting to this major change was no easy feat, but when he re-joined Jobs West, his work ethic was apparent and it was clear that he would have an unwavering commitment to any role he took on.

To get him back on track, Darryl’s Employment Specialist encouraged him to participate in the Jobs West weekly workshop and attend regular job search meetings. We decided to keep an open mind about opportunities, and soon, he landed a role portioning food at a prep kitchen. While it wasn’t his preferred field, it was a great stepping stone. His employers quickly noticed his dedication, but unfortunately, the company went out of business, leaving Darryl searching once again.

Not one to be discouraged, Darryl took on a brief work experience in a hotel, gaining insight into a completely new industry. Though different from his warehouse background, the experience kept him motivated and open to new possibilities. Soon after this, he secured a temporary position as a warehouse assistant, reigniting his passion for the fast-paced environment he loved.

In April 2023, Darryl interviewed for a position at All Right Ladders, a local Vancouver company. Alex, the manager, was impressed and offered him a job. He began working full-time, handling a wide range of duties. However, we quickly realized that easing into the role with a part-time schedule of essential tasks, like cleaning and tidying, would set him up for long-term success. As the months passed, Darryl’s reliability and work ethic shone through. Alex saw his potential and gradually increased his hours and responsibilities. Now, nearly a year later, Darryl is thriving. He has learned how to use a circular saw and has even been entrusted with closing up the shop – an incredible testament to his growth and dedication. He continues to work closely with Alex on his training plan, learning new tasks every day in an environment which he loves.

“Alex always has something for me to do. Even if things are going slow, he will always give me a job.  This matters a lot to me because if I keep busy then the day goes by quickly and it is a productive day!” – Darryl
