Another Successful Walk and Roll and a Big Thanks to Our Canada Summer Jobs Staff

This year’s Walk and Roll was a success! Around 150 people joined us on August 8 at Trout Lake Park for a day of food and fun. The day started with a walk around Trout Lake to various stations led by the Canada Summer Jobs workers. Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) provides wage subsidies to employers to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years.

This year’s Walk and Roll included a “Canon Bag Toss”, “Gold Coin Count”, “Walk and Roll the Plank” obstacle course, and more! We had a well-received talent show showcasing clients from our three day programs. We had a West 8th Band, Dance from Victoria, and Mandolin performance from East 16th. We finished the day off with a water balloon fight.

The staff and clients enjoyed the day! A client from Victoria said that her favorite part was walking around Trout Lake in the sun. Another client said she enjoyed performing. One staff member said she enjoyed the diversity in the types of activities as they targeted different skills like balancing, coordination, and teamwork.

We also announced the winners of the Staff Wellness Challenge. Each week staff had challenges to complete based on the 8 domains of wellness: physical, nutritional, financial, emotional, social, environmental, intellectual, spiritual, and occupational. For the first time, the wellness challenge was extended to the whole association, with participation from programs such as Child Family, Respite, Residential, and Starworks.

Each week, staff would complete individual and a group challenge to collect points. The overall individual winner was David Wong from Main Street Drop-in and the top program award was given to the Fraser Day Program. As an increased incentive the fitness leaders reached out to businesses around the community to donate prizes for staff who completed the wellness challenge. The prizes included fitness passes from Lagree West, Barry’s, and Modo Yoga, Gift cards from Stongs, the Keg and The Old Spaghetti Factory, and even 2 tickets to the BC Lions! We want to thank our sponsors for donating these prizes and making the challenge a hit.

Thank you to everyone for an amazing Walk and Roll and Wellness Challenge! And a special thank you to Jasleen and her team at Dominos for the pizza, CSJ workers, managers, and admin for setting up and running the day.
